The First 1,000 Days matter most

The first five years of life are a period of rapid growth and vulnerability. In rural Malawi, children under five face a high risk of preventable illness and death due to delayed care, malnutrition and limited access to health services. Common childhood illnesses, such as pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria and malnutrition, remain leading causes of mortality, not because they are untreatable, but because care often comes too late.

For families living in extreme poverty, distance to facilities, transport costs and lack of timely information mean caregivers frequently delay seeking care until a child’s condition becomes severe. Our Proactive Doorstep Care changes this by ensuring care reaches children early, consistently and close to home.

What Support Looks Like for Children Under Five

Through structured household follow-up and community outreach, Wandikweza provides:

  • Routine home visits to monitor child health and development

  • Early identification and management of common childhood illnesses, including malaria, pneumonia, and diarrhea

  • Nutrition screening and counseling, with referral for malnutrition where needed

  • Growth monitoring to identify faltering early

  • Immunization follow-up and defaulter tracing in coordination with health facilities

  • Health education for caregivers, focusing on danger signs, hygiene, and appropriate care-seeking

  • Timely referrals and follow-up for children requiring facility-based treatment
